Mary Ellen Mark is an American photographer, known for her poetic photojournalism. She started photographing at the age of 9, using a brownie box camera. Usually, she chooses to deal with social issues in black and white. She has often photographed children, like the children in circuses in India that we are showing in this post.
Her approach towards children is what differs and sets her appart. To her children are not children and are not treated as such, you can see this in how honest her photographs are. The idiot way in which most label people as children, teenagers, and so on doesn’t apply to Mary Ellen Mark. She sees them as real people, which she might like or dislike. Through her work she tells their stories, stories of strange small people outside the borders of society.
